Last year’s OB Dinner was once again a great success. It was our 70th Anniversary of the Association and his Eminence Keith Patrick Cardinal O’Brien honoured us with his presence as our guest speaker. He gave a witty, entertaining and at times thought provoking speech. We also had a representative from Ampleforth, Fr. Gordon Beattie an OB of Carlekemp, who brought good wishes to the OBs from all our friends down south. The meal was first class as usual. Thanks go out to Maurice T., Chris D., Alasdair Mac. and Ralph G. for the wine, port and Bennies.

News :
The project for our 70th Anniversary to renovate and re-site the War Memorial in its original place on the drive was successfully accomplished, the report appears in the minutes. Since then we have obtained a list of our fallen heroes with some comments from Peter Barry our oldest OB:
John Sneddon M.N. missing at sea from Edinburgh.
Louis McFall RAF, DFC a very special guy, killed in North Africa.
Robert Levack Cameron Highlanders, swimming champ, Capt. Rugby 1938-39, killed in Burma, nickname ‘Podge’ from Lossiemouth.
Angus Mackay, Queens’ Own Cameron Highlanders; School Captain 1935-1936, very good batsman and real good guy, killed in Kholima Burma, from Inverness.
Jimmy Chapman MC, Black Watch, another School Swimming Champ, another special fellow, killed in N. Africa 1941.
Felix Savy RAF from Kingussie.
Jerry Ryan RAF killed in Malta.
John Wemyss RAF.
J. Chalmers.
Colin Haynes Army killed after D-day, from Dundee.
Halford Lawrence a plucky little lad joined MN, he said age 19, lucky if 17: lost at sea 1945, known as ‘Halfie from Glasgow’ (my faithful skivvy 1940).
Richard Kelly.
John Singleton.
All their names are on the wooden plaque which used to be in the OB Chapel but is now sited in the lodge chapel. The monks at the Abbey also provided ten padres during the war. In the First World War Dom Odo Blundell celebrated Mass with Firth of Clyde Fleet, while Dom Lane Fox, MC joined the London Irish charge at the Battle of Loos after previously losing right hand and right eye in a grenade accident.
Fr. Benedict’s moving rededication blessing was:
‘Lord, bless this monument. May it help us and all who see it, to know, to remember, to thank, to pray for them who gave their lives. They were doing their duty on behalf of their generation, and of us inheriting their legacy. And we remember them as a credit to our school and our Association. Lord, grant them peace and honour with you in heaven. Eternal rest grant … may they rest in peace.’
Chris Stephenson in his Naval uniform then laid a wreath, which was kindly donated by the local ex-servicemen’s club.
