Website: Our webmaster Colin Bryce sent the following report. The website has been regularly updated with content ths year and older news is being moved onto an archive page. The website forum was very active earlier in the year but has gone quiet recently. Some more photos from the 70s and 80s kindly provided by Andy Dempster were uploaded into the picture gallery earlier this year and John Murray also provided a number of memorabilia from the 60s and 70s.A particular interesting find this year was a school notebook handed into SENSE, a charity shop in Kent. They identified the school as FA Abbey School and contacted the Corbie Website. It contained many newspaper cuttings about sporting fixtures, photos and written notes from the mid 1930s. Colin identified the author as Freddie Macqueen who attended our school with his brother Alec. Alec’s sons Johnnie and Alasdair also attended our school in the 50s. The scanned notebook is now available on the website. One poignant photo is of young Robert Levack who captained the 1st XV in 1938. He lost his life in Burma in 1944 and is commemorated on our OBs’ War Memorial. There is also a newspaper cutting of a discussion with the Edinburgh Council regarding the proposed transfer of the Abbey School and monastery to Edinburgh. The notebook story has a happy ending as Freddie’s daughter who had never seen her father’s notebook from his time as an Abbey schoolboy has been given the notebook. The chairman on behalf of all present gave a great vote of thanks for Colin’s sterling work.
Committee Report: Last year’s 70th Anniversary Dinner was a great event. His Eminence Keith Patrick Cardinal O’Brien was our honoured guest speaker and gave us a witty entertaining and at times thought provoking speech. The chairman read out a letter of thanks from the Cardinal ‘for your wonderful welcome and warm hospitality’ he also thanked us for our donation which he split between SCIAF and Missio Scotland. He finished by saying, ‘With my kindest regards and my renewed and sincere thanks and good wishes to all of the Old Boys for your ongoing celebrations – I wonder how many will be present at the Centenary in thirty years’ time !’. It was a long and happy night the meal was first class, thanks go to Maurice, Chris, Alasdair and Ralph for the Wine, Port and Bennies.
In September Lawrence Hogarth organised a very successful trip to Ampleforth for OBs and wives. The itinerary included a tour by Fr. Prior Richardson whose uncle was our own Fr. Anselm. One day we had afternoon tea with our monks. Fr. Edward at 98 is still in good form and Fr Francis had just been appointed Prior of St Benet’s College Oxford. On Sunday we had lunch at the Fairfax Arms and afterwards a tour of the Yorkshire Dales. We also joined the monks in the choir stalls for services: Matins 6.45 Lauds 8.00, Vespers 6.20 and Compline 8.15 mind you only Henry Murphy made Matins both days and was soon christened Brother Henry!. We all stayed in the Grange which has its own little honesty bar and one night Professor Colin McAllister tested our knowledge with a quiz. Very many thanks to Lawrence for organising this jaunt and by the way the Ampleforth Monks have adopted us and would like us to look on it as our second home.
Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer Mark Dunn said after expenses of £502 which included donations and postage and stationery for the Newsletter, we showed a small loss of £242 and our bank balance was now £5,577. The chairman on behalf of all thanked Mark for continuing the good work of his father Joe.
Elections: The officials were voted in en bloc. The Chairman Ralph Giulianotti in his 18th year of office was persuaded to stay for another year.
AOB; Mike Cipolato asked for advice from Chris Stephenson and Colin Bryce on uploading photos onto our website. Kevin Deady has kindly given his collection of photos to the OBs for the website. Colin McAllister suggested a biannual dinner. As there was no other business the chairman quickly concluded the meeting to accommodate our speaker for the night Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow of Mary’s Meals fame. Due to another commitment Magnus was unable to stay for dinner but kindly agreed to speak to us beforehand.
