Nigel Guthrie was a Scottish international bridge player and computer systems engineer. Born in Lusaka, Zambia, Nigel attended Carlekemp between 1947 and 1953, travelling back and forth by plane (see photo of Neil departing 1952). Legend has it that it was the monks of Carlekemp who first taught dad how to play bridge.After Carlekemp, Nigel attended George Watson’s School for Boys, followed by Edinburgh University. He graduated in maths from Edinburgh and received a masters degree in computing at Heriot-Watt University. He was married twice, first to Val, then to Sandra. He lived and worked in Edinburgh and Reading, returning to Glasgow with Sandra on his retirement. He is loved and missed by Sandra, his children Resi, David and Babs and his granddaughter Eve.
A truly kind, fair, generous man, Nigel was passionate about bridge, friends and family. He would travel anywhere possible for a good game of bridge and a chat over a glass of red wine. He loved his duffle coats, cakes, buckets of strong tea and biscuits.
He had serious health problems for a long time but they didn’t stop him from winning national bridge competitions from his hospital bed. When he left hospital to go into care the nurses, physios, doctors and registrars from all the different wards he’d been on came to wish him well and say goodbye. He charmed everyone he met and is much loved by many.Nigel’s funeral took place on Friday 16 September at St Joseph’s Church, Tollcross, Glasgow.
